RemoveWGA will enable you to easily remove the Microsoft "Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications" tool, which is calling home and connect to MS servers every time you boot. Futures updates of this notification tool will (officialy) setup the connection rate to once every two weeks.
Once the WGA Notification tool has checked your OS and has confirmed you had a legit copy, there is no decent point or reason to check it again and again every boot.
Moreover, connecting to Microsoft brings security issue for corporate networks, and privacy issues for everyone. It is also unclear which information are transmitted (Microsoft published an official answer, but an individual study brought some questions).
All of that, along the fact that Microsoft used deceptive ways to make you install this tool (it was told you it was an urgent security update, whereas it is a new installation giving you no extra security) makes me calling this tool a spyware.
Also, Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications is different than Windows Genuine Advantage Validation. RemoveWGA only removes the notification part, phoning home, and does not touch the Validation part.

Educating for Democracy: Book Burning and "Wagging the Dog"

In the farce that passed for national news several weeks ago, an obscure minister from South Florida managed to get more attention from the media and General Petraeus, Secretary of Defense Gates and President Obama than a slightly more newsworthy story such as a cure for cancer or the sudden appearance of a massive asteroid heading straight for earth. This skillful manipulation of the public hunger for anything that is sensational reminds me of the 1997 movie, Wag the Dog.
With a brilliant, hilarious, and eerily prescient screenplay by David Mamet and stellar performances by Dustin Hoffman and Robert De Niro the movie revealed the power of a savvy media PR man and an inventive Hollywood producer to manipulate the media into creating a non-existent "War" with Albania in order to distract the public from a Presidential scandal shortly before election day. The ease with which DeNiro's and Hoffman's characters were able to hoodwink the press into accepting rumors that Albania was harboring "terrorists" and that a "suitcase dirty bomb" was about to be transported into the United States by Albanian terrorists through Canada makes it appear that this farcical film was written after Operation Iraqi Freedom (originally Operation Iraqi Liberation but scrapped for obvious acronymic reasons) rather than before.
The threatened "Quran-burning" which, even when aborted, has provided al-Qaeda with a bonanza of a recruiting opportunity calls to mind another example of PR trumping news: a Billy Wilder movie, "Ace in the Hole" (1951) in which Kirk Douglas plays a cynical reporter who stumbles on a story about a lone miner trapped in a cave-in. Knowing the longer the story is spun the more coverage it will get, he cons the mining engineers into taking a slower route to rescue the miner who, as a consequence, dies before they can get to him.
However, neither of these movies could anticipate the truly carnival atmosphere (the alternate title to Wilder's movie was The Big Carnival) created by the publicity seeking minister and the effect his planned action of stupidity would generate. It was the kind of story that, in saner times, before the media was so pathetically competing for viewers of the bizarre and moronic, would be relegated to a four-line item at the back of the minister's local paper along with the reported rescue of a treed cat or a description of a Sunday school picnic.
But I do think that the Reverend Jones' meteoric rise to national prominence deserves some form of positive emulation. So I propose that for the purpose of introducing a more constructive agenda into our national consciousness: a college student from a prominent university will threaten to burn ("threatening" would be sufficient) an outrageously overpriced textbook in front of his college bookstore. The press -- local and national -- would be invited to witness the threatened event and would be provided with informational literature demonstrating the enormous list price of the book compared to its production cost.
Today, the press and the media in general, which include blogs, tweets and yawlps (a new form of electronic communication I would like to develop consisting of belch and yawn reader reactions to political blogs) seem to thrive on the kind of news that is filled with misinformation, misperceptions and negative feelings about our fellow Americans and others. Since its efforts have aided and abetted the toxic political climate we now face, I would hope that my suggested contribution to national news might foment a more constructive use of a destructive act: raise the national awareness of how college students are being ripped off by "higher" (priced) education.
It would be a welcome change if once in a while the media would martial their considerable resources to address the more serious problems facing this country such as joblessness, homelessness and helplessness plaguing Americans than their over-extensive coverage of pissing contests between second-rate politicians with third-rate minds and fourth-rate vocabularies as if their rants made a damn bit of difference in dealing with the realities of this rapidly declining democratic system

Randy Moss and Brett Favre? It Almost Happened (Twice)

The strange ranting of Randy Moss last week -- upset that the Patriots don't show any interest in renewing his contract -- takes me back to the weekend of the 2007 Draft; much of it spent trying to sign Moss. It was a brief but intense negotiation that fueled some fire with Brett Favre when, for the first of two times, the Packers couldn't agree with Moss on a contract.
Moss for sale
The Oakland Raiders' experiment with Moss ended after two seasons when Moss could be had for a mid-round pick. We had some interest at the Packers. Brett was extremely jazzed about the idea.
Now there were two parts to the deal to make it happen. First, there had to be agreement with the Raiders on draft pick compensation. We were offering a fifth-round pick and the Patriots later came up with a fourth. That, however, was the not the key to the deal.
One-year deal breaker
I negotiated with Moss's agent while the recruiting from the alpha dogs -- Brett and Tom Brady -- intensified. Moss was getting texts and calls throughout the weekend from both Favre and Brady both imploring him to come and form a powerhouse duo.
The offers from both teams were very similar for 2007, both around $3 million with additional incentives. Our proposal allowed Moss to make more than the Patriots proposal, although we had significant money tied to 45-man active roster bonuses, protecting us from injury if he could not play.
Our offer, however, required a second year in 2008. Moss and his agents were adamant that he wanted only a one-year deal. Having lost market value from his Raider experience, Moss would agree to a massive pay reduction for 2007 but wanted to hit the open market in 2008 coming off what he expected to be a big season.
The feeling in our discussions was that we did not want to rent Randy for a year only to have him shop to highest bidder in a few months trying to recoup some of his lost earnings in 2007. We discussed different ideas, but in the end we were insistent on a two-year deal. While we haggled about an appropriate roster bonus to activate the second year of the deal, the Patriots relented on the length and agreed to a one-year deal. That was it; he was going with Brady.
Mississippi burning
Brett was livid. The rest of the weekend I was fielding calls from his agent Bus Cook about what went wrong in trying to sign Randy. I listened patiently to their rancor and tried to explain our position.
I truly empathized with Brett. He had befriended and admired Randy for years and the two of them had dreamed of playing together. Here was an opportunity for us to make it a reality. But ultimately, we stood on our principles requiring more than a one-year commitment.
Brett was forever wanting a more aggressive attitude by the front office toward player acquisition than the present regime. My constant message that our method of drafting and developing talent rather than acquiring proven commodities only served to frustrate him and add to his resentment of a general manager that showed him none of the compassion and welcomed input of previous regimes.
Patriot games
Fast forward to 2008. After a wonderful year for the Patriots, catching 98 balls for 1493 yards and 23 touchdowns, Moss was a free agent as he designed, now with interest from several teams to cash in on his one-year deal. And cash in he did, re-signing with the Patriots for a three-year, $27 million deal with over $14 million guaranteed.
And guess what team showed some decent interest again in 2008? Yes, the Packers (along with the Eagles and Cowboys). But again, despite getting Brett's hopes up again, the Packers bowed out of the bidding (I had left the Packers at that point but heard the anger and frustration from Brett's camp). Moss re-signed with the Patriots on March 3rd. Favre retired from the Packers on March 4th.
Whither Randy?
Now Moss is coming to the end of that deal with deafening silence from the Patriots about re-signing for the third time. A lot can change between now and March, but it appears he has had his run with the team, and it's been a successful and lucrative one. And one that found the Packers in second place for his services twice.

The Ports Manager shows also the processes which listens on the ports so you can quickly see which processes must be shut down to close a specific port. You can kill a process and put it to quarantine for a later restore if needed.
Autoruns:View and edit all autorun entries. More than 30 different autorun locations are displayed and can be edited as well. Beside the default registry autoruns of the current user (HKCU) and all users (HKLM), a-squared HiJackFree also shows autoruns in files like win.ini, system.ini, autoexec.bat and config.sys. Additionally it lists all programs which are automatically run by the autorun start menu folder.
Autoruns can be deactivated temporarily or removed permanently.
The tricky autoruns cover all locations of the registry which are not mainly used to autorun files, but can also be used to start processes like the default screensaver path and others.
Services:With the included Service Manager you can easily see which services are installed and started. Additionally to the Windows Service Manager it shows the full path to the executable service file in the list to help identifying potential harmful services quickly. It also lists services that are not shown in the Windows Service Manager.
Explorer- and Browser-Addons:The Addons section of a-squared HiJackFree allows you to view and edit plugins and addons of the Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer. Addons are mainly Browser Helper Objects (BHOs) which extend the functionality of the browser or additional Toolbars.
LSP Protocols:The LSP section shows all installed Layered Service Providers which are some kind of network drivers. Some spywares use LSPs to place ads on transferred website files you view with your browser.
Hosts File:The Hosts file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. This file is loaded into memory at startup, then Windows checks the Hosts file before it queries any DNS servers, which enables it to override addresses in the DNS.
You can use the Hosts file to redirect ad network server names to localhost to avoid ads on websites. Another 'feature' of the Hosts file is used by worms. Many of them use that file to redirect all requests to websites of Antivirus companies to localhost to avoid removal of the worm.
Active-X:The Active-X section shows all installed Active-X modules (DLLs) on the system. The list shows invalid references which can be removed.
Quarantine:When removing Malware, you may be in a situation where you are not completely sure if a program is really malicious or not. In such cases it is useful to remove a specific file or autorun, but keep a backup copy at the quarantine for a later restore. Check the "Save Backup" option when killing and removing a task at the Processes or Ports lists.
Online Analysis:The a-squared HiJackFree Online Analysis is a very powerful helper feature to see quickly which autoruns, processes, addons or open ports are harmful. You can click the "Refresh Online Data" button to get the online analysis directly at the program or you can also click the "Online Analysis" button at the right top of HiJackFree, to see a combined analysis web page.
